Worked for me too - w/o any exercise!

I was nervous that for some reason it would not work for me, but it did!

  • Total cholesterol 220 > 154
  • LDL 244 > 84
  • HDL stayed the same at 53
  • Triglycerides 103 > 87

I did the first 9 steps as best I could (plus some other things) (did not exercise at all) ...

  • Oatmeal 5-6 days a week (Coach’s Oats made with Soy Milk, sliced almonds and two scoops of flax seed)
  • Benecol chews 2-3 times a day with meals,
  • Cholest-Off pills 1-2 times a day before meals
  • Smart Balance with plant sterols (3 times a week)
  • Apple 3-4 days a week
  • Beans as 3-5 days a week
  • Metamucil powder (1-3 times a day) everyday
  • Garlic supplement at night
  • Fish Oil supplements (daily)
  • Multi-Vitamin
  • Niacin supplement (3-5 days a week)

I read two other books on Cholesterol too, but this one was the easiest to follow. Highly recommend!

Still waiting for my doc to apologize.

Cheese was my go-to protein after becoming vegetarian as an older adult, and full-sugar sodas my drink of choice for decades. I was 40 pounds overweight in June 2010, not feeling well despite my “healthy” vegetarian diet, and due for a tetanus booster. I hate going to the doctor (ever since his nurse announced my weight in front of a Brad Pitt-lookalike drug rep loitering next to the scale), but decided to have some blood work done along with the vaccination because it had been a while.

Surprise! Total cholesterol 245, LDL 169, blood sugar 99, and my gallbladder was in revolt. My doctor sat poised over the prescription pad insisting that I MUST go on cholesterol medication because I couldn’t possibly reduce my numbers with diet alone. After all, he takes it himself because he doesn’t want to give up his cheeseburgers.

With memories of a beloved uncle whose health was destroyed by one of these meds, my response was “no way”.

The library had several books on reducing cholesterol, including “Cholesterol Down”. It was informative, detailed enough for those who want scientific facts, and simple enough for those who just want to know what to do to improve their health.

I followed the program as well as switching to a new, tasty diet soda and reducing cheese intake, and five months later followup numbers were:

  • Total cholesterol 20
  • LDL 136,
  • Blood sugar 72, and
  • Gallbladder/liver readings in the mid normal range

Oh, and I lost 18 pounds without having time to exercise.

I can’t recommend this book more highly - the program is doable, the results measurable, all without spending $100 or more a month for meds or risking the side effects. Now if we could just figure out a way to get the obnoxious drug ads off of the TV…”
